A Face Transplant First, A Milestone in Care Equity
At Mass General Brigham, we continue to support health equity and innovation. Robert Chelsea is the first Black patient to receive a full face transplant at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
An open, welcoming environment for all
Diversity, equity, and inclusion make us stronger. When all voices are heard and ideas are valued, we can all grow as a community.
Through our workforce development program, more than 600 people have graduated with health care training and a career at our hospitals.
Having played a role in the first-in-the-nation task force to eliminate racial and ethnic disparities, we continue make strides in care equity. We employ many efforts across the system to make all feel welcome:
- Hiring a diverse workforce to reflect the communities we serve
- Working hard across all areas to become culturally competent
- Improving partnerships in our surrounding communities
- Finding areas for improvement and making changes

Care in the LGBTQ+ community
In July 2018, Mass General Hospital launched its Transgender Health Program, an effort to create a safe and inclusive environment for transgender patients and their families. Josue D. Espinoza, MHA, (left) leads this program and other clinical practices and is a leader for LGBTQ+ health initiatives at Mass General Hospital.
Mass General Brigham has consistently been the recipient of the LGBTQ Healthcare Equality Leader, awarded by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.
